The job market is tough right now – there’s no denying that. Looking for a position in and of itself is difficult, and then when you consider the full extent of what a job change entails? I can already feel my blood pressure rising. Even after spending countless hours scrolling through GlassDoor and other job boards for honest reviews about a company, I knew I was still only getting one side of the story.
To help ease your decision-making process and simplify your research, I interviewed Kimberly Knopf, a long-time manager at A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air. As someone who has been working as the Content Manager for A&E for six months now, I wanted to provide you with an insider's perspective, from both a seasoned and new employee. We talked about everything we enjoy, things that can be stressful about working here, but, ultimately, why we love it here so much.
In this article, Kimberly and I will share our honest opinions on everything from health benefits to company culture, giving you a genuine, personal glimpse into life at A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air.
7 Things I Deeply Admire About A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air
1: A&E Offers Fantastic Benefits
Even during my first day at A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air, I could tell just by the benefits that the company genuinely cares about the team’s well-being. A&E provides 100% covered health insurance after the probationary period, offering peace of mind for unexpected medical issues or, like in my case, ensuring your little ones are protected.
The generous PTO and holiday package offered, including a floating holiday for your birthday, ensures you have the time to relax, recharge, and celebrate special moments.
Kimberly is especially proud of this perk, as she feels that this flexibility helps our team rest and recharge, encouraging them to be happier and more productive by being rested and having the opportunity to refill their cup.
2: A&E Goes Above and Beyond Wherever Possible
Beyond traditional benefits, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is offered to everyone, which is especially beneficial so you can feel supported by whatever life throws your way (including mental health resources).
Kimberly and Andy, as well as the other managers, understand that life can be challenging, so they’ve prioritized having confidential, easy access to this kind of help.
3: A&E is Incredibly Committed to Personal Growth
In-house training is provided to encourage A&E team members to grow with the company through access to fantastic external resources like BDR, Contractor University, and Interplay Learning.
The company covers the cost of relevant courses taken on your own time and even offers one-on-one coaching with incredible firms like IMPACT and BDR.
4: Unique Perks A&E Offers
Kimberly and I also talked about some of the unique perks that you won’t find everywhere, proving how much A&E believes in going the extra mile for the team.
For example, there is a 50/50 program for tools (have you seen those prices these days?). Tablets and work phones are also provided for those who need them. A&E also gives employees $250 each year they’ve been with us on their anniversaries.
My birthday with A&E was celebrated with a special $50 bonus, which is sometimes more than what I get from my family.
These perks combined show me how valuable I am to A&E and how appreciated my work is, which encourages me to go above and beyond wherever I can.
5: My Voice is Heard and Respected at A&E
While some smaller companies can sometimes be a pain to work with (or for), I’ve found at A&E that, as a smaller company, there’s more flexibility to make accommodations.
Personally, I’ve approached Kimberly more than once to ask her to consider accommodations for me alone. Not only did I feel comfortable approaching her because of the communication-oriented work environment fostered here, but my request was accommodated in a way that worked for both of us, promoting my trust in both her and A&E.
As someone who has worked with larger companies in the past, I can say without hesitation that the open-door policy A&E management adopts ensures my voice is heard, considered, and acted upon in ways that I would never expect.
6: The Communication is Top-Notch
I’ve also noticed that teamwork and collaboration at A&E are genuinely central to its operations. Between the regular meetings and training opportunities fostering open communication and mutual support, I can see the difference my thoughts and ideas have in the business.
7: How A&E Handles (the Inevitable) Conflict
Even conflicts, which are inevitable in any dynamic, are thoughtfully and tactfully handled by our wonderful HR Manager, Bonnie. A&E has proven time and time again that they are thoroughly committed to thoughtful conflict resolution and a supportive culture, which only goes to further highlight the company’s commitment to a healthy, happy work environment for all.
3 Challenges of Working at A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air
While I love working at A&E Plumbing, Heating and Air, there are a few considerations that come with the territory.
1: A&E Moves Fast
We understand that the phrase "work hard, play hard" can sometimes be a cliché, but we believe in communicating what working in a fast-paced environment truly entails. During peak seasons, the workload can be intense and demanding, requiring everyone to stay on top of their game.
We know this environment isn't for everyone. It requires a blend of speed, efficiency, and unwavering dedication to customer service. But for those who thrive in such settings, it offers a rewarding and dynamic work experience. If you’re ready to meet these challenges head-on, you’ll find a supportive team at A&E committed to your success.
2: Navigating Open Communication and Speaking Up
Another concern has been that communication may not be initiated by management as frequently as some may expect or appreciate. A&E trusts its team members to bring issues up rather than expecting only management-led communication.
However, speaking up can be tough for some people, and because of that, employees sometimes feel that they are not being heard to the extent they need. A&E constantly works towards a culture where feedback is both welcomed and valued.
To address this, A&E holds monthly meetings between managers and team members, as well as actively encourages open communication. A&E also has monthly meetings where team members are emboldened to voice their concerns or suggestions in a structured setting.
3: A&E’s High Expectations Can Be Daunting
Finally, A&E has incredibly high expectations of its employees. It takes a special kind of person to thrive here—someone who is self-motivated, professional, and able to manage their responsibilities independently.
A&E expects the techs, for example, to provide service with a smile. You’re trusted to show up on time, represent A&E well, and treat every customer with respect and dedication. This can be tough for some people who are used to the rough and tumble nature of HVAC work.
While this can be demanding, the company supports us with the tools and training needed to succeed. If you’re someone who thrives under pressure and enjoys taking initiative, you’ll fit right in.
Despite these challenges, the supportive environment and the opportunities for growth and development make it a rewarding place to work.
